Liposuction
Liposuction performed by experienced specialists at partner hospitals in Bangalore.
Liposuction remains one of the most performed cosmetic procedures worldwide, designed to remove stubborn, localized fat deposits that don't respond to diet and exercise. It's worth being clear from the outset about what it is and isn't — liposuction is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss treatment.
What liposuction actually targets
The procedure removes subcutaneous fat — the layer just beneath the skin — from specific areas rather than reducing overall body weight significantly. Commonly treated areas include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, upper arms, chin, and back. It works best on people who are already close to their target weight but have localized areas resistant to typical fat loss.
Techniques used today
Modern liposuction has moved well beyond older, more traumatic methods. Common current approaches include:
- Tumescent liposuction: a saline solution with local anesthetic and a vessel-constricting medication is injected into the area first, reducing bleeding and post-procedure pain — this is the most widely used base technique today
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction: uses sound waves to liquefy fat before removal, often helpful for denser, more fibrous fat areas
- Laser-assisted liposuction: uses laser energy to break down fat cells and can offer some skin-tightening benefit alongside fat removal
Your surgeon will recommend a technique based on the treatment area, the amount of fat being removed, and your skin's elasticity.
What the procedure day looks like
Depending on the extent of the treatment, liposuction is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, and typically takes one to three hours. Many patients go home the same day, particularly for smaller treatment areas; more extensive procedures covering multiple areas may involve an overnight stay.
Recovery and results
Swelling and bruising are expected for the first two to four weeks, and compression garments are typically worn during this period to support healing and help the skin adapt to its new contour. Most people return to desk work within a few days to a week, though more strenuous activity is usually restricted for three to four weeks. Final results become clearly visible once swelling fully resolves — often around three months, with skin continuing to settle for up to six months.
Maintaining results
Because liposuction removes fat cells rather than shrinking them, the treated areas don't typically regain fat the same way — but significant future weight gain can still affect results elsewhere on the body, which is why maintaining a stable weight after the procedure matters.
