Heart valve replacement addresses one of the more serious forms of heart disease — when a valve no longer opens or closes properly, forcing the heart to work harder and, over time, risking heart failure if left untreated. Why valves fail
Heart valves can become damaged through several causes: age-related calcification and stiffening, congenital defects present from birth, infection (endocarditis), or as a consequence of rheumatic fever earlier in life. The result is either a valve that doesn't open fully (stenosis) or one that doesn't close completely, allowing blood to leak backward (regurgitation).
Two approaches to replacement
Traditional open-heart surgery
The valve is replaced through an incision in the chest, with the heart temporarily stopped and blood circulated by a heart-lung machine. This remains the standard approach for many patients, particularly when multiple valves or other cardiac issues need addressing at the same time.
Minimally invasive and catheter-based replacement
For certain patients, particularly those with aortic valve disease, a newer technique delivers the replacement valve via catheter — often through the femoral artery — without opening the chest. This generally means a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery, though it isn't suitable for everyone; your cardiologist will assess based on valve type, overall anatomy, and surgical risk.
Mechanical versus biological valves
Replacement valves come in two main types, each with real trade-offs:
- Mechanical valves are extremely durable and rarely need replacing again, but require lifelong blood-thinning medication
- Biological (tissue) valves don't require long-term blood thinners but typically wear out after 10–20 years, which matters more for younger patients who may eventually need a second procedure

Recovery timeline
Open-heart valve replacement typically involves a hospital stay of five to seven days, followed by six to eight weeks of restricted activity and a structured cardiac rehabilitation program. Catheter-based replacement often allows discharge within two to three days and a notably faster return to normal activity.
